Hey guy and gal. Good to hear yet another funny, entertaining review, as always. For the Prisoner of Azkaban I have to say it was the first time (with the possible exception of Sleepy Hollow)I actually got a feeling of foreboding from a set design. Everything seemed darker, the light seemed sickly like you would have reflecting off snow at night, and the sets seemed rather gothic inspired. I wasn’t that interested in seeing this movie. I had at the time only just been forced into reading the books by my soon to be wife. The first two books I trudged through and was unimpressed with. During the evacuation for hurricane Rita I decided it was a good chance to catch up to her (Fat chance she consumes the books. One week for all seven!) so I packed along Prisoner of Azkaban, Goblet of Fire, and Order of the Phoenix. It turned out to be a remarkably good choice since we couldn’t get back home for three weeks so plenty of downtime. Prisoner was an engaging read but I fear it suffered from my disappointment with the previous books. It was good enough that I looked forward from there on however and Goblet of Fire is probably my favorite of the series followed by Half-blood Prince.
It is strange how one could go from an uncaring, unbiased observer of the movies, to enraged fanboy when a favorite scene or character is deleted for time sake. (Where the hell were Bill and Fleur?!?! And I already know I’m gonna be torn to shreds when a certain jovial doppelganger exits so I actually wouldn’t mind being spared that.)In short I owe a lot to Prisoner of Azkaban for giving me a second look at a great series. I think the movie suffered for me in the same way. It was the turning point where things starting getting serious but was still just the first opening of the deeper plot within so I could feel how long it would take for things to come to fruition and that soured the experience for me. I think Goblet (for being the first to go there)and Half-blood (for the great guardians demise) rank so highly for me because they seem the most real, as far as endings go, with the price for victory being ultimately high. So while it is not my favorite movie or book in the series I do still appreciate it for opening my eyes to a deeper story within. Pratchett’s still better in my opinion though. When does Good Omens come out again?
Keep up the great work. Here’s wishing you many more with no Mindays in sight.
