Rounding up the Month of Horrors were take to task two films, both alike in nature, but one (the original) is better than its remake. These films are [Rec], the 2006 film by Juame Balaguero and Paco Plaza, and Quarantine, the 2008 America remake by John Eric Dowdle.
Both films follow the host of While You Were Sleeping and her cameraman as they follow a squad of firefighters. The squad is called to assist with an injured old woman, but find themselves stuck inside of an apartment complex that is being terrorized by the unknown.
It’s the differences that make and break the films. What are they? Well, listen to find out.
Mark and Mindy also briefly discuss the Doctor Who spinoff Torchwood and a documentary about the audition process for 42nd Street.

As Mark and Mindy get halfway through the month of horrors, they tackle one of Mindy’s favorite films - Tod Browning’s 1932 masterpiece Freaks. The film follows a group of circus sideshow performers who just want to be accepted as normal. When a vindictive trapeze artist and her strongman lover try to take advantage of the sideshow performers, the group decides to fight back.
The episode also features a fun-filled discussion of the new film Zombieland, which both Mark and Mindy absolutely love! Check it and Freaks out today!

The greatest month of all the year (in Mindy’s opinion, at least) kicks off with a great little horror comedy from 2004, called Hatchet.
This delightful romp follows a group of tourists on a ghostly swamp tour outside of New Orleans. Unfortunately, the ghost is all too real, and the group finds themselves running for their lives. The gore is a bit over the top, but it’s so fun and far-fetched, you don’t even mind.
Plus, after the show, Mark talks a little Sunshine Cleaning, and Mindy dishes on season 6 of Scrubs.
Hatchet is the first in our Month of Horrors, and we hope you enjoy the spooky month of films we have in store for you. Special guest Joseph (Ultact on the interwebs) introduces Mindy and reintroduces Mark to the 1994 Australian comedy The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.
Priscilla follows two drag queens and a transsexual who travel across Australia on their way to a performance in a small resort town. The film features fantastic performances from Hugo Weaving, Guy Pearce and Terence Stamp. Woven into the earthy color of the Australian outback are beautiful, vibrant costumes, which garnered the film an Oscar for costume design.
The group also talk briefly about Joss Whedon’s Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, the British horror-comedy Psychoville, the Paris Hilton horror Repo! The Genetic Opera and The Wackness.

This week, Mindy’s favorite Hollywood couple reunites to bring George Cukor’s 1949 film Adam’s Rib to life.
Adam’s Rib, inspired by a true court case, has couple Adam and Amanda Bonner (Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn respectively) squaring off in the courtroom with Amanda defending Doris Attinger (Judy Holliday) and Adam on the side of Doris’ cheating husband, Warren (Tom Ewell). The tension from the courtroom bleeds into the Bonner’s personal lives creating a dramatic, yet humorous tale that is relevant to this very day.
Also, Mark and MIndy discuss the new films District 9 and Inglourious Basterds.

This week, we talk about a favorite film, Peter Jackson’s The Frighteners from 1996.
We talk all sorts of trivia on this film, which stars Michael J. Fox, Trini Alvarado, Peter Dobson, John Astin, Chi McBride, Jake Busey, Dee Wallace, R. Lee Ermy and the incredible Jeffrey Combs.
Fox plays Frank Bannister, a psychic who turns from scamming local residents to trying to save them once the Grim Reaper sets its sights upon his town. Bannister, along with Dr. Lucy Lynskey (Alvarado), work to unearth who is behind a series of killings all the while trying to stay away from creepy FBI Agent Milton Dammers (Combs).
In addition, we briefly touch upon Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist.

So Mindy’s twisting of Mark’s arm finally paid off, and they are reviewing one of her new favorite films, the 2004 Russian film Nochny Dozor “Night Watch.” (Although the show probably should be called “Mindy Gushes for an Hour.”)
The duo talk about this film, which follows Anton and his induction into the Night Watch and his first assignment after his training. During his first assignment, he nearly gets himself killed, pisses off a vampire and the entire Day Watch and makes friends with an owl…all while trying to save the world from a destructive vortex.
In her gushing, Mindy also talks about the film’s sequel, Day Watch, as well.

For our super special 25th episode, Mark and Mindy decided to take on one of their favorite classics: Alfred Hitchcock’s 1954 film Rear Window.
This cinematic gem features Jimmy Stewart, Grace Kelly and Raymond Burr in a story that shows why you shouldn’t spy upon your neighbors. After breaking his leg in a photography accident, L.B. “Jeff” Jeffries (Stewart) finds himself intangled in the lives of his neighbors as his only form of entertainment is voyerism. Jeff and his girlfriend, Lisa Fremont (Kelly), begin to wonder if the disappearance of the wife of neighbor Lars Thorwald (Burr) has more sinister origins.
In discussing this film, Mark and Mindy talk about Hitchcock’s legendary appeal as the “Master of Suspense” and what their favorite films are.

This week Mark and Mindy take on the 2008 Oscar-nominated film Valkyrie, starring Tom Cruise, Kenneth Branaugh, Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkenson and (Mindy’s crush) Eddie Izzard.
Valkyrie follows the infamous July 20 Plot, in which a group of German soldiers, politicians and business men tried to assassinate Hitler and overthrow his regime.
Mark and Mindy are somewhat divided over this film, but that doesn’t stop the show from being entertaining and enlightening. Plus, you can also hear what Mindy thought about Drag Me to Hell and how Mark feels about Hoosiers.
Finally, we read listener mail from Mary (aka Mekka), Jakob and Jamie (aka thenewgroove). Enjoy!
